Assembly passes two historic bills

Tripura assembly created history today by passing two bills reserving 50 percent seats for women in all urban local bodies including Agartala Municipal Council (AMC) and three tier panchayati raj institutions. The bills were passed on the same day when the women’s reservation bill was passed in Rajya Sabha. And both bills were passed unanimously. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said expressed his satisfaction over the smooth passage of Tripura Panchayat (Fifth Amendment Bill), 2010 and The Tripura Municipal (Fourth Amendment Bill).

He also stated that this was indeed a momentous day in the states history He received full backing from acting leader of opposition Mr Gopal Roy who mentioned that Congress always supported reservation for women. Panchayat minister Mr Manik De expressed hoped that after the enactment of the bill there will be more representation of women in the decision making process.
