Tripuri

Tripuris form the biggest tribe of the state comprising about 60 percent of the total tribal population. It is estimated that more then one lakh tripuris live in chittagong Hill tracts, Chandpur and Comilla areas in bangladesh. In Tripura, they are found in large number in Khowai ,Agartala,Bishalgarh and Kamalpur sub-divisions. However, they are scattered in most of the areas of the state . They belong to the Bodo group of Indo-Mongoloid origin and are one of the Kakborok linguistic groups . So far religion is concerned, Hinduism dominates this tribe with traits of animism . Interaction with the people of plain areas has also had a great effect on their religious practices . Tripuris coming in contact with the Rajbanshi and Coach of Bengal have become the bearer of a mixed culture of Aryan and aboriginal culture culture since ancient days. The origin of the cultural explosion among the Tripuris can be traced to the court of the Tripuri Kings, most of whom being lover of culture, provided utmost patronization . The golden fruits of Bengal’s literature and culture has also had a great effect on the Royal culture ambience which crossing the border of the court become the universal culture of the Tripuris.

Reang

After Tripuris,it is Reang who can claim to be the second largest tribe of Tripura. Some historians and writers have preferred to call them clan of the Tripuris. It is said that the Reangs came from Chittagong Hill Tracts of present Bangladesh over to this side of Tripura years back .Though the Reangs have much affinity with the Tripuris as far as language is concerned, their socio-cultural customs and style of living are totally different from those of the Tripuris . The linguistic similarity between the two has been a result of influence of the Tripuris  due to proximity over decades. Reang habitations are mainly found in Belonia , Amarpur , Longthari Valley, Gandachhera and Kanchanpur Sub-Division . Being Mongoloid originated , Reangs prime faith is animism. Still they worship several Hindu deities also.

Noatia

Noatias are believed to be a branch of the tripuris. It is interesting to note that none of the Noatias uses ‘Noatia’ as his surname. Instead, they use ‘Tripuri’ after their names. It has been observed that those who had been living in Tripura for meny generations claim to be original Tripuris and those who came from east Bengal are called as Noatias. Moreover , their socio- cultural rites, rituals and customs are similar to those of the Tripuris who use ‘Debbarma’ instead of Tripuris after their names. Therefore, it would be misleading to say that Tripuris and Noatias are different communities. In Tripura (Noatia) concentrated areas are Subroom, Belonia, Amarpur, Gandacherra, Longtarai Valley , Kamalpur and Sonamura sub-division. Outside the state they are found in Assam , Chittagong Hill Tracts and Comilla in Bangladesh in considerable numbers.

Though Jamatias live in small chunk in several places of the state, major portion of them live in udaipur , Belonia, Amarpur, Khowai, Bishalgarh and Gandachhera Sub-Division. Jamatia are hard working agriculturists and are conscious about cultural values. Different cultural activities like song, dance and acting add diversity to their lives.
