Traditional folk media has an important role in the creative artistic process particularly in the field of folk performing arts. There are so many traditional folk media in tripura which are depended on both Bengali and Tribal culture. In the traditional cuture Tribal community of Tripura going to under change due to influence of Bengali culture and it effect on types of worship and belief of tribal of Tripura ,whether culture and religious is interrelated with each other.

There are various types of folk media in Tripura which are carried culture of this beautiful state.

Keertana:-The Keertana or Harikatha is a kind of concentrated drama,a monodrama in which one gifted actor enters swiftly a whole series of character mood .The ancient saga Narad is believed to have spread from Maharashtra to Karnataka and Tamilnadu about 150 years ago. Mainly associated with the Bhakti movement in religion and literature ,it has been used by saints like Kabir and Tukaram to preach the Hindu faith ,and also to bring about social reform and political change .It is such a potent weapon in social education and Lokmanya Tilak is reported to have said that if he were not a journalist ,he would have been a keertankar.

Three types of Harikatha or Harikeertan are popular .The traditional or Naradiya Harikatha ,the warkari Harikatha and Nationalist Harikatha is exploited by the central and state Goverments to educate the masses on family planning ,development activities ,democratic values and national integration with the help of Kathakass or keertankars.All India Radio and Doordarshan too are using Keertana form for broadcasts beamed at industrial workers and rural audiences.

The warkari Harikatha is current in Maharashtra in two styles.In the more popular styles,it takes the form of devotional worship among warkaris of the Dnyaneshwar Tukaram seet.The Keertankar selects episodes or verses from the writing of the two saints and chants tham .He then explains their spiritual significance with the help of sereval stories from the Hindu epics and scriptures.

The second style is a one man show ,more sophisticated and elaborate ,but also more interesting .The keertankar begins the keertana with a theme song from a religious book ,and explains and comments on it. He then goes on to narrate an interesting episodes from the life of Sri Krishna or any other God, and bring out moral and spiritural meaning .

 

Puppetry :-Puppetry has fascinated children and adult of all climes for centuries .In India four styles of Puppetry have proved popular in different points of the country.

Sutradhanka:Puppets are manipulated with long strings in states of Rajasthan ,Orissa,Karnataka ,Tamilnadu also in Tripura.The costumes used generally belong to those seen in the folk theatre of a particular state.For instance Orissa puppets known as Sakhe Kundhei are dressed Gombe yatta in the Yakshagana mode.In Tamilnadu ,the puppets are operated by string and rodes and are called Bommlattoms.In Tripura it is called Putulnaach.The string of each puppets are attached to an iron ring on the head of the puppeteer,which leaves him free to operate the puppets with his hands.(To be continue)
