Keertana:-The
Keertana or Harikatha is a kind of concentrated drama,a monodrama in
which one gifted actor enters swiftly a whole series of character
mood .The ancient saga Narad is believed to have spread from
Maharashtra to Karnataka and Tamilnadu about 150 years ago. Mainly
associated with the Bhakti movement in religion and literature ,it
has been used by saints like Kabir and Tukaram to preach the Hindu
faith ,and also to bring about social reform and political change
.It is such a potent weapon in social education and Lokmanya Tilak
is reported to have said that if he were not a journalist ,he would
have been a keertankar.
Three types of Harikatha or Harikeertan
are popular .The traditional or Naradiya Harikatha ,the warkari
Harikatha and Nationalist Harikatha is exploited by the central and
state Goverments to educate the masses on family planning
,development activities ,democratic values and national integration
with the help of Kathakass or keertankars. All India Radio and
Doordarshan too are using Keertana form for broadcasts beamed at
industrial workers and rural audiences.
The warkari Harikatha is current in
Maharashtra in two styles. In the more popular styles,it takes the
form of devotional worship among warkaris of the Dnyaneshwar Tukaram
seet. The Keertankar selects episodes or verses from the writing of
the two saints and chants tham .He then explains their spiritual
significance with the help of sereval stories from the Hindu epics
and scriptures.
The second style is a one man show ,more
sophisticated and elaborate ,but also more interesting .The
keertankar begins the keertana with a theme song from a religious
book ,and explains and comments on it. He then goes on to narrate an
interesting episodes from the life of Sri Krishna or any other God,
and bring out moral and spiritural meaning .
