Biplab calls for organic farming, stresses on black pepper export

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb today referring to Sikkim, the state that was declared organic only recently said, despite several odds Sikkim gained the tag of organic state and Tripura, in all respect, has the potential to win the title. “Very little amount of land in Sikkim is as fertile as Tripura. Despite several odds lack of irrigation, lack of proper land and many other issues, Sikkim become the first organic state of North East. But, if compared Tripura has all the potential to become much bigger organic state” the Chief Minister said a workshop organized by state agriculture department.

He also said, the hillocks and “Tilla” areas of Tripura are also fertile and if we move ahead with certain plans, soon the state will become an organic state. What we require is proper planning and well monitored implementation, he added. Speaking on the prospects, he said, after pine apple Tripura has possibilities in another produce produced most of the time in organic ways black pepper. Black pepper and beetle(areca) nuts are highly produced in some areas of Dhalai and North Tripura districts.

 If a well oriented plan is chalked out, soon these two products could be exported in diffrrent parts of the country. In Tripura the farmers barely get Rs 250 to Rs 300 for each Kg of black pepper but actually the prices are higher in outside state markets, the Chief Minister claimed.  He also told the gathering that the market of organic products were growing throughout the state and country, people should switch over to organic agriculture for better results. However, higher officials of agriculture department and agriculture minister Pranajit Singha Roy also attended the programme.
