Bangladesh presents model relationship in India’s neighbourhood first policy: EAM S Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka this afternoon. Dr. Jaishankar had a discussion with her on issues of mutual interest. He said that India is looking forward to hosting  Prime Minister Hasina in October in New Delhi.

Earlier in the day, the External Affairs Minister held discussion with his Bangladeshi counterpart Dr. A K Abdul Momen. Talking to media after the meeting, Mr Jaishankar said that the purpose of the visit is to affirm the strong relationship of partnership and prepare for the Bangladeshi Prime Minister’s visit to India.

He stressed the importance of enhancing connectivity between the two countries. He said India Bangladesh relations are a model of neighbourly relationship that goes much beyond the strategic relationship between the two countries. Dr. Jaishankar also reiterated India's commitment to cooperation in sectors like energy and infrastructure with Bangladesh.

Speaking about Rohingya refugees, he said India wants a safe, sustainable and speedy return of the displaced persons which is in the interest of all the three countries. Dr. Jaishankar said, India is looking forward to a mutually acceptable formula on water sharing of common rivers between the two countries. External Affairs Minister will be leaving for Kathmandu tomorrow morning after concluding his three-day visit to Bangladesh.
